Mountains of the Moon

The sun sets over the Ruwenzori Mountain range in western Uganda. The Ruwenzoris are Africa’s highest mountain range with the popular moniker of “Mountains of the Moon” with Mount Stanley as the highest mountain within the range. With an elevation of 5,109 m (16,763 ft), it is the highest mountain of both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, and the third highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) and Mount Kenya (5,199 m). The peak and several other surrounding peaks are high enough to support glaciers. Mount Stanley is named for the journalist and explorer, Sir Henry Morton Stanley. It is part of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO world Heritage Site.^[1]

These two mountains marked the entrance into the NFD during the Colonial era. Today it is considered the entry into the Northern Forgotten District of Marsabit and Samburu Districts. During the Shifta wars of the 70’s and 80’s this was a treacherous area to pass which necessitated the traveling in armed convoy.
